Village Farm Tiny Home Community has partnered with Green Gate Farms to develop the first Agrihood in Austin, Texas. This Agrihood is just south of Meadows of Walnut Creek in East Austin. This partnership brings farmers Skip and Erin onsite to live within the tiny home community while providing a farm stand, hen house for fresh pasture raised eggs, and a greenhouse to this thriving and expanding tiny home community.
The work towards sustainable living at Village Farm is recognized by owners of Roberts Communities for those seeking a minimal environmental impact with a wellness focus on their daily lives without sacrificing modern design and functionality. Village Farm offers over 10 different tiny home models with full customizations as well as community pools, playground, dog parks, grills, BBQ Pits, pavilion, community gardens, composting, farmhouse, and community center. Green Gate has operated a farm stand beside the Big Red Barn for more than 14 years and this new renovation offers the opportunity to include a dedicated farm stand area just inside the overhang featuring custom-made produce tables, cement floor, sliding barn door, and plenty of space to display produce, eggs, flowers, and more. Neighbors will once again be able to buy fresh organic vegetables, flowers, meats, eggs, honey and more from local Austin farmers and artisans.
It’s not a new idea to feature a farm as the centerpiece of a new neighborhood development, but the people behind Village Farm Tiny Home Community believe it’s the first ‘agrihood’ in Central Texas and the first tiny home agrihood in the country.
Powers said in the next few years, people will be able to live in any of the 170 tiny homes built around the farm. At the same time, Roberts Communities is also building a general store in the middle of the development for residents. Powers hopes more tiny home communities pop up around Austin as a solution for lack of affordable housing while the city’s population booms.
As people move to the neighborhood, they can buy produce from Green Gate Farms at a reduced price than the public. No resident is required to buy from Green Gate Farms, but Connett and Flynn hope people will volunteer and help plant and harvest the produce and flowers on the farm.
